Leftovers in the fridge: UK vs US

Fridge-storage guidance is not interchangeable. Use the country-specific window that applies where you are, and only after food was cooled and refrigerated properly.

United Kingdom

Cooked leftovers: generally use within 2 days / 48 hours. Proper cooling and refrigeration still matter.

Cooked rice: use within 24 hours. Rice has its own shorter guidance and should not be assessed using the general leftover window.

United States

Supported refrigerated cooked leftovers: generally use within 3–4 days. This federal guidance assumes the food was handled properly and kept refrigerated.

Prompt refrigeration after cooking or serving still matters. Refrigerating food later does not erase a period when it was left out too long.

Use the guidance for your jurisdiction

UK and US authorities use different recommended storage windows. Those windows assume food was cooled and refrigerated properly; uncertainty about its handling history can change the advice. Use the regional guide and the checker for the country and situation that apply to you.
